Residents may begin seeing staff from the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD) working in New Hope as the 2026 mosquito control season gets underway.

Field crews began operations April 13 across the metro area to monitor and reduce mosquito populations. Workers can be identified by bright yellow “Public Health Mosquito Control” vests and may be traveling by truck, bike or on foot. Helicopter treatments may begin as early as the week of April 20.

MMCD uses a range of methods to track and control mosquitoes, including inspecting wetlands and catch basins, setting traps and applying treatments by hand, drone or helicopter when needed. Staff may occasionally access private property to check standing water.

All materials used are tested for safety and applied only when effective. Treatments are designed to target mosquitoes with minimal impact on people, pets and wildlife.

Based on current conditions, MMCD expects an average season, with higher numbers of cattail mosquitoes possible in early July.
