Winter Weather Reminders
Posted on 12/16/2025
When winter weather hits, New Hope Public Works springs into action to clear snow and ice from City streets, keeping travel safe for everyone. You can help, too, by following a few important winter tips.
A snowfall of two inches or more triggers a snow emergency, during which parking on City streets is prohibited until roads are cleared curb to curb. Year-round, parking is also not allowed from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m., regardless of snow conditions. Vehicles left on the street during a snow emergency may be ticketed and towed. Snow emergency alerts are shared through local media, the City website and social media.
Drivers should slow down and give snowplows plenty of space, as plow operators have limited visibility and may back up or turn unexpectedly. Children should be warned about playing in snowbanks, which can collapse or hide hidden dangers.
Sidewalks and fire hydrants also need attention. Residents and business owners are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property within 12 hours of a snowfall. Shoveling out fire hydrants near your property helps firefighters respond quickly when every second counts.
Finally, keep trash and recycling bins off the street to make it easier for plows to do their job and avoid toppled bins. Never shovel or plow snow into the street, across a street or onto a neighbor’s property, as this is against the law.
