October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. During its meeting on Sept. 22, the New Hope City Council passed a resolution declaring October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This initiative aims to raise awareness of the issue and highlight local resources and support for victims.
Domestic violence affects a significant portion of the population. In the United States, approximately 1 in 3 women and 1 in 10 men over the age of 18 experience domestic violence, resulting in over 1,500 deaths each year.
The New Hope Police Department collaborates with Missions Inc., a local nonprofit organization that offers shelter, legal advocacy and support services to victims of domestic violence in Northwest Hennepin County. Since 1980, Missions Inc. has worked with local law enforcement to provide safe housing, legal assistance, and other resources to help victims rebuild their lives.
In 2024, Missions Inc. served 716 individuals through its programs, which include shelter and legal advocacy services, many of whom were residents of New Hope. These services offer guidance through the legal system, assistance with protection orders and connections to community resources for long-term support. All services are free, confidential and voluntary.
Each October, purple flags are displayed outside the New Hope Police Department to symbolize the victims and survivors of domestic violence and to affirm the City and department’s commitment to supporting them and connecting the community with available resources.
“Partnering with Missions Inc. allows us to provide critical support to survivors within our community,” said Police Chief Tim Hoyt. “Domestic Violence Awareness Month is an important time to remind individuals that help and resources are available.”
