Celebrate Safely: Fireworks Safety Tips

Celebrate Safely: Fireworks Safety Tips
Posted on 06/26/2025

July brings barbecues and fireworks, but even legal fireworks can be dangerous. Every year, thousands — especially children and young adults — suffer serious injuries from fireworks. Even small items like sparklers and firecrackers can cause burns, with sparklers burning at 2,000°F and accounting for over 25% of fireworks-related ER visits. For children under five, sparklers cause nearly half of all injuries. Fireworks also spark an average of 19,000 fires annually in the U.S.

LEAVE FIREWORKS TO THE PROS
While some fireworks may be legal, that doesn’t make them safe. The National Safety Council strongly recommends enjoying fireworks at public displays conducted by professionals — a safer, more responsible way to experience the thrill without the risk.

IF YOU CHOOSE TO USE FIREWORKS, FOLLOW THESE SAFETY TIPS:

  • Keep fireworks away from young children; supervise older kids closely.
  • Never use while under the influence.
  • Always wear protective eyewear.
  • Light fireworks outdoors, one at a time, and never in your hand.
  • Stay clear of people, homes and flammable materials.
  • Never relight duds; soak used or unused fireworks in water for 24 hours before disposal. Never dispose of fireworks in garbage cans or dumpsters if there's even a chance they are still hot.
  • Keep water or a hose nearby.
  • Avoid illegal or homemade fireworks.

SAFER ALTERNATIVES TO SPARKLERS
Looking for something fun and festive without the risk? Try glow sticks, confetti poppers or colorful streamers instead — especially for young children. These alternatives can still add sparkle to your celebration without the burn hazard.

Stay safe and have a sparkling, injury-free summer!
