At the December 2019 City Council work session, Council requested that the Citizen Advisory Commission (CAC) be presented the options for tobacco use prevention and give their recommendations on the matter.

Staff is working with Hennepin County Public Health to put together a presentation to present to the Citizen Advisory Commission at the February 11, 2020 meeting (meeting starts at 7:00 p.m.). This presentation will outline the options the city has in terms of tobacco use prevention for its ordinances.

Recently, the federal government raised the minimum age of tobacco use from 18 years old to 21 years old, so at the minimum, the City will need to change the tobacco licensing ordinance to reflect these changes. However, there are still many other tobacco use prevention strategies that cities in the surrounding area have implemented in their codes recently beyond Tobacco 21.

Businesses in New Hope that sell tobacco products have been invited to attend the meeting. The public is welcome to attend and ask questions or give opinions on the matter.

The CAC’s input and recommendations will be presented to the City Council at the February 18, 2020 work session.
