Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, 1 in 4 deaths are caused by heart disease, according to the American Heart Association.

1. In. 4. That's a scary statistic!

The good news? You can make healthy changes to lower your risk of developing heart disease. Controlling and preventing risk factors is also important for people who already have heart disease.

While nothing on this list is likely to come as a surprise, it's always good to get a reminder of what you can do to lower your risk of heart disease:

• Watch your weight
• Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke
• Control your cholesterol and blood pressure
• Manage your salt intake
• If you drink alcohol, drink in moderation
• Get active and eat healthy

As it often is, it's the little things that add up to make a big difference!
