Become a West Metro Firefighter
West Metro Fire Rescue District is currently recruiting part-time paid, on-call firefighters. Interested individuals are encouraged to bring their family and their questions to an Information Meeting and Family BBQ that will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16 at Station 3 (4251 Xylon Ave). Additional information is also available by contacting Joel Nelson at 763-230-7007 or firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline for firefighter applications is August 12.
Celebrate Duk Duk Daze July 18-20
Duk Duk Daze, New Hope’s annual community celebration, will be July 18 to 20. Most of the events will be in Northwood Park, 38th and Boone avenues. The festival will include a variety of fun activities for the entire family, many of which are free. Fair hours are Friday, July 18, 5 to 11:30 p.m., Saturday, July 19, 11 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., and Sunday, July 20, noon to 5 p.m.
Activities scheduled include carnival games, rides and food, Lion’s Bingo, live music at 7 p.m. by Zeew Factor on Friday and Armadillo Jump on Saturday, a kiddie parade at 11 a.m. on Saturday (this year’s theme is “Out of this World”), the beer tent, and much, much more. There will also be tennis, bean bag and men’s softball tournaments.
The highlight of Duk Duk Daze will be two gigantic fireworks displays. This year, the fireworks will be on both Friday and Saturday evenings at dusk. For a complete Duk Duk Daze schedule, visit www.dukdukdaze.com.
Nextdoor.com launches in New Hope
The city of New Hope is working in partnership with Nextdoor (www.nextdoor.com), the private social network for neighborhoods, to help improve neighbor-to-neighbor communications and communications between the city and its neighborhoods.
With Nextdoor, New Hope residents can join private neighborhood websites to share information. Neighbors can use their Nextdoor website to share recommendations for a babysitter or a plumber, ask to borrow a ladder, organize a neighborhood gathering, find a lost pet, or share information about suspicious activity in the neighborhood. Ron Clark Construction breaks ground on Compass Pointe apartments
Representatives from Ron Clark Construction, the city of New Hope and the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency broke ground on Compass Pointe, a 68-unit apartment complex on the southwest corner of 62nd and West Broadway on Friday, June 26. The project, which is being built on formerly city-owned property with federal tax credits obtained through the MHFA, will have a total value of about $13 million.
New Hope EDA approves Hy-Vee term sheet
In late June, the New Economic Development Authority (EDA) approved a term sheet with Anderson-KM Builders, LLC and Hy-Vee Inc. for the sale of the 13.3 acres of city-owned property at 4200/4300 Xylon Avenue N. The EDA also authorized the preparation of a purchase and development agreement. In a related action the New Hope City Council passed a resolution formally supporting the inclusion of a gas station and convenience store as part of the Hy-Vee master plan.
The term sheet specifies that Hy-Vee will purchase the former Kmart site, Wells Fargo drive-through site and parking lot site at 4200/4300 Xylon Avenue N. for $3,725,000. The city will retain a small, .052 acre parcel at the corner of Xylon Avenue and 42nd avenues for use as a public plaza. The term sheet calls for the closing on the sale of the property to occur by September 30, 2014. (more...)
Four candidates file for New Hope City Council
Four candidates filed for city council member in the city of New Hope by the filing deadline on June 3. The candidates for city council are:
- John A. Elder
- Jonathan D. London
- Louis D. Oswalt
- Daniel Stauner
Because fewer than five candidates filed for the two open city council seats, there is no need for a local primary election. Candidates for federal, state and district court offices will be on the primary election ballot on
August 12. A sample ballot for the primary is available online at mnvotes.org.
New Hope outdoor pool is open
New Hope’s Milton C. Honsey outdoor pool is open for the season through Sunday, August 17. Pool hours are 1 to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 1 to 7 p.m. on weekends and July 4. Daily pool admission is $8 per person, $6 after 5 p.m., or a 10-admission coupon book is just $60. Season pool passes are available that are also good at the Crystal pool. The final session of Red Cross certified swimming classes for age 3 through level 6 begin on July 28. The New Hope pool is located just south of New Hope City Hall at 4301 Xylon Avenue North. Yard waste site is open
As you begin to spruce up your lawn and landscaping after its long winter nap, remember that the Maple Grove yard waste site accepts and recycles leaves, grass, brush and branches. The site, located at 14796 101st Ave. N., opens for the season on April 1. The site is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 7 p.m. through November 30. Comprehensive Annual Financial Report and Management Report
The 2013 City of New Hope Audit will be officially presented at the Council meeting on May 27. Once the audit is accepted by the Council, it will be forwarded to the state.

Farmers Market on Saturday mornings
The New Hope Community Farmers Market season is from June 21 to October 4. The market, which features about 70 vendors, is a great place to get farm-fresh vegetables and fruits. It’s also a good place to browse the handiwork of local artists and crafters, discover some locally prepared foods, and listen to home-spun entertainment.The market will again be held in the former Kmart lot, across from New Hope City Hall, 4401 Xylon Avenue N. New Hope City Services Survey now available online
New Hope's 2014 City Services Survey is now available online. The survey is part of the city's participation in the state's Performance Measurement Program for cities and counties. This is the fourth year that New Hope is conducting a survey to assess residents' satisfaction with core city services including police, fire, streets, water, parks and recreation services, and more. The 12-question, multiple-choice survey is available on Survey Monkey here. New Hope residents should complete only one copy of the survey per adult resident. The survey will remain online until July 31. A summary of survey results will be published this fall.
State of the City Presentation
The city of New Hope, in cooperation with the Twin West Chamber of Commerce, held a State of the City event on Thursday, February 13. City manager Kirk McDonald provided highlights of City activities in 2013 and looked forward to significant projects in 2014. The presentation is available for on demand online viewing here.
